CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Dax
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
When I saw Vivie standing in the middle of the fancy hotel suite looking like a lost child, my heart nearly cracked open. I desperately wanted to go to her, hold her, and make her smile. But I didn't know if I had it in me to achieve it, and if I did, to what end? My job was to keep her safe and find Bobby to put him away.
I did the only thing I could to protect myself, and that was to go through my emails and check in with my team. It made me an asshole to ignore her when she needed someone, anyone, including me, but I'd never said I was a saint. She knew what and who I was, which was probably why she left the room to take a nap.
For a moment, I thought I heard her crying. When the door shut behind her, I made my way to it, pressing my ear against it. Sure enough, she wasn't just crying, she was weeping. I leaned against the door, scrubbing my hand over my face, grappling with what I should do. A good and decent man would go in and help her. I'd like to think that despite all my hard edges, I was good and decent, but I couldn't get myself to open the door. Giving in to my need for her was too much of a risk. A risk to my ability to protect her. To my ability to protect my heart.
Eventually, decency won out and I gently knocked on the door. "Vivie?"
When I didn't hear anything, I cracked the door open. The bedroom was empty. A shot of adrenaline ran through me as I scanned the room wondering what the fuck had happened to her. When my gaze landed on the bathroom door, I noted it was closed. Behind it, I heard the shower. Relief ran through me, and if I was honest, it wasn't just relief that she was safe but also relief that I didn't have to go in and figure out how to comfort her.
I needed to go back to work. And I did, but I did it right there outside the bedroom door. I leaned against it like an idiot, getting as close to her as I dared while keeping the barriers that were necessary between us.
I was able to go through all my emails and log into our system to find out what was going on. The team was doing exactly the things I'd assigned them to do, but they had no news to report. No sightings of Bobby. No paper trail. No information about the bullet beyond what we'd already known.
Missions like this were frustrating, but something about this one niggled in my gut. I was missing something. But what? I ran through the entire case again, but nothing stood out that made Bobby make sense. I was left with the same questions. How was Bobby able to hide once he reached the
